The Apostles are the “executors” of Jesus Christ’s estate. A testament is a will. It goes into effect with the death of the testator (Heb. 9:15-17). In Luke 22:14, Jesus is sitting at the Passover table with the “TWELVE APOSTLES…” (compare Mt. 26:20, Mk. 14:17, and Lk. 22:3). The word “twelve” in the Greek is DODEKA, which is a compound of DUO (two) and DEKA (ten). In Luke 22:29, Jesus said, “And I BESTOW upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me.” The word “bestow” (NKJV) is “DIATITHEMI” means “to place separately, i.e. to dispose of by a will.” Jesus “appointed” the TWELVE to be His executors; He placed them in trust to execute His last will and (NEW) testament.
On the awesome day of Pentecost, (Acts 2:14) “PETER, STANDING UP WITH THE ELEVEN, raised his voice..” and made known the terms of new covenant pardon, in effect, giving the “reading of the will” of the estate of Jesus Christ and offering the terms of pardon, the ETERNAL INHERITANCE (Heb. 9:15) which was about to be “bequeathed.” This was fitting and proper since Jesus had given PETER the keys to the kingdom/church (Mt. 16:18-19).
At Pentecost, the crowd of devout Jews were cut to the heart (Acts 2:37) by the Gospel message and “said to PETER AND THE REST OF THE APOSTLES, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” Acts 2:38. “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls” Acts 2:41. “Praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved” Acts 2:47.
Thus the apostles “executed” Jesus’ new will, salvation was “bound” and sin was “loosed” and Christ’s eternal inheritance was made available to every creature, Mk. 16:15-16. The Lord added those who obeyed Peter’s message into His kingdom/church which was established that day. Only the apostles are/were qualified to be the executors of Jesus’ last will and new covenant. That’s why the book is the ACTS OF THE APOSTLES. jcd
